Shelton. . . Learning How Blessed I Am. . .

I haven't blogged in a really long time. . . In part, because I have not been able to put all of my feelings down. I've also been busy with work (we went electronic on August 2 with our medical records and a fellow provider was on vacation almost the entire month), my mother, and other family matters.

This past week was one of the hardest weeks I have ever experienced. Many of you are aware of the fact Shelton has been terribly ill. We attempted to try everything and finally it was time to realize that there was nothing else available to help him. He had become incontinent for the most part, he had sores over his body, and he refused to eat/drink. After having my vet talk with numerous other vets/vet schools to confirm there were no other options, I made the decision to put him down. Just as a side note, I hate those words! I honestly hate how we say "putting an animal down." I don't know how else one would express this event, but it seems cruel when defined that way.

I hated having to make this decision. I cried over it for hours on end. Yet, I knew deep down it was the only option we had. He was suffering and I was being selfish by keeping him alive.

The picture above was taking at the Vet's office. I was so blessed to have Andrea Wood come that day to take pictures. It was important to me to have those. Maybe that is strange for some of you. However, for me, it was necessary. Shelton went to sleep peacefully. He is no longer suffering. I was able to be there and hold him through the process.

What I learned throughout the process was simply this, God cares and loves for me so much! His love was shown by so many people. Two weeks prior to this, my mom fell and broke her wrist- which required surgery. My grandmother was admitted to the hospital. My dad currently has a lot of issues with his knee and will need a knee replacement soon. We are still dealing with the unspoken issues, that I hope one day to share with my readers and church family. Until then, I continue to ask for prayers. We are seeing some light. . . although rather dim and still in the distant, we know it is there. We know GOD IS ABLE!

Between all of these events, It felt as times if my life had about 10 (ok, sometimes it was like 20!) glass balls in the air- and I was barely keeping them up.

During this time, my dear friend, Jill, passed away. I was unable to attend her memorial service due to my grandmother needing me for an appointment. I don't regret that as I know two things about Jill- she would understand that I was taking care of a need, and JILL is the real deal! Jill's faith and her perseverance through ALS taught me so much. We miss her, but we know that she is in heaven right now, celebrating with our King. . . I told one of my friends, Lindsey, that all day after I learned of her passing, I had an image of Jill holding Ayden, kissing his soft head. And, I believe she was holding him as he enjoyed a wet puppy kiss from Shelton. Jill was a true prayer warrior for my family. I loved the times I could spend one on one with her helping her with needs. Those precious hours with her served me so much more than I know I ever served Jill.

I am still asking for prayer for our family and for Ms. Molly. She has always been with Shelton and her previous owners had another dog. She cries so much when I leave. So far, I have only left for short times- even today when I was at the ECU game, I was only gone for a few hours, she was hoarse from whining/howling. I am on call next week, so she will have some longer days.

Yet, through the past few weeks, God showed me his love through the hands of many people. The men who came and stayed at my house late- very late- after we hit the wall of clay- to dig Shelton's grave. The people that let us borrow pick axes to break through. The men who came to bury him. People who made certain I left the house and also that I had time alone. People who moved patients at work so I could be off for both my mother's broken wrist, surgery, and for Shelton. People who sent me cards, emailed me, and posted on my Facebook page messages of encouragement. People that I know were praying- and continue to pray- for my family. People that have called me almost daily to make certain I was ok. People who grabbed me and gave me a hug. People who prayed with me. People who have asked- How are YOU DOING?

I am so blessed.

Thank you.

Grateful For. . .

So, I wanted to share about one thing that God truly blessed me with from folks in the past and I think overall, I came out way on top. . .

Ok, so I guess I cut to the chase with the title of this post! :o) I found out on Wednesday that Shelton has Cushing's Disease. He was started on medication and hopeful that will help. Dr. M. at one of our last visits asked me if he could send us to the state veterinary hospital. I had not wanted to do that as it did not feel "right." He attended a conference recently and spoke with one of the medicine specialist. Basically, I was encouraged to agree to more extensive bloodwork, which diagnosed him with Cushing's Disease. He had been having more seizures, more UTIs, and looked as if he weighed 40lbs (he has not gained weight, he only weighs 28lbs.) so I had hoped to find "something" to fix him.

I posted a picture of Shelton and Dr. M. from a visit several months ago. He looks so small in that picture compared to now.

Please continue to pray for my parents. I know God is in this. Today, I had a very strange encounter with someone at the "core" of all of this. . . It was clearly God appointed and I pray I handled it correctly. I believe I did. GOD IS IN CONTROL of this situation. He is so faithful and I praise HIM for that!

God Bless!

How Does your Garden Grow??

So, I am giving it a whirl. . . I am trying some container gardens. . . Carrie, thanks for giving me a boost to try it. Lindsey, thanks for getting my mind thinking about it with your garden posts. . .

I have a friend who has offered to build me some raised beds, so I may plant a few more things, we shall see.

Shelton/Prayer.

Shelton had his recheck for his thyroid levels today. . . For the past week, Shelton has had to potty every 2-3 hours, drinking large amounts of water, had another seizure, and still having accidents. I spoke with the vet last week and he had a few suggestions, but nothing has helped.

My first thought over the past few weeks, Shelton has really gained weight. Actually, Shelton weighs the same as he always has, but the first comment from the vet was that he noticed his "belly" looked bigger. It really does.

So, the new thought is that he has Cushing's Disease (another disease common in beagles! :o) This can also cause seizures, incontinence etc. All the symptoms he has been experiencing. We will know more on Friday when some of his blood work comes back. The vet was cautious to not tell me a lot of information (in case it isn't that), but he answered my questions honestly. I understand how it works in people, just not dogs! Bottom line: It is very similar to the disease in people. It is not always easily treated in dogs, and it will shorten his lifespan.

Please keep praying for my parents as I am concerned about them. Yet, I know my God is faithful and I feel a lot better after some one on one time with him this evening. I know that I am truly blessed!

I still do not have an answer to my previous post. . .Let, again, I know God has a plan!!

I know he is in control and there will be "beauty from these ashes!" That is one of my favorite scriptures and I posted part of it below, Isaiah 61:3-4

3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
that have been devastated for generations.

Hope you are well! Shelton and Molly say "HOWL!"

Grateful for. . .

Ok, so the lack of a laptop sort of threw me for a loop the past week. . . In order to "catch up" on my grateful for posts, I am going to do a ten item list (in no order). :o) Here it goes. . .

1. Tonight I am really grateful that I have a savior who loves me enough when I fall so short. I went to see FIREPROOF again today. I love the scene where Caleb comes to know that being a good person has nothing to do with it. . . Many days I don't feel anything I do is "good enough," yet I know that it is only through GRACE I am saved!I am so glad God can love a very imperfect me!

2. I am grateful that I have Shelton and Molly in my life. They are the greatest doggies! Shelton will turn 4 on November 22!!

3. I am grateful for my friend, Eugenia. She is an amazing mom, wife, daughter, and sister in Christ! Thanks, Eugenia, for letting me talk at weird hours of the day/night, for listening and offering advice, for praying with me, and for always "having my back!" :o) LOL

4. I am grateful that God has given me a home that I can share with others.

5. I am grateful for my sister. She is an amazing person!! She has helped me so much this past year! God gave me a wonderful sibling, but even more of a friend. I had the pleasure of going to FIREPROOF with her today. :o)

6. I am grateful that I have a job. So many people are out of work, facing pay cuts, hungry, and/or loosing their homes. God is walking this journey with America.

7. I am grateful for my college friends, Erica and Jessica. We were blessed to meet in nursing school and have remained friends ever since.

8. I am grateful for Julie and Eric Maas, friends who are missionaries in Belize.

9. I am grateful for having my car back since the accident even if it still has its issues. I will be happy to have a car to drive.

10. I am grateful for being friends with Carrie from CHS. She has become one of my close friends. We enjoyed a great time at the beach (even if I was back and forth due to Eugenia's mom). I can't wait to craft again with her very soon!!

Ok, I should be able to do a daily post from now until the end of the month. :0) What are you grateful for?? :o)

Doggie Days

The other night, I came out of my bathroom after a long hot bath (I was trying to relax my back muscles) and found this. . . My camera was out so I decided to snap a few pictures. Makes you smile.

On Saturday, I went to Walgreen to purchase a few items my PT recommended I use. I saw this there. Shelton LOVES his "Woobie," so I had to buy it for them! It is huge! I debated about spending the money, but felt they haven't had a lot of TLC from me lately, so why not?!?!?

A girl's gotta have. . .

A girl's gotta have. . .
A sanctuary.

Scripture I'm workin' on learning. . .

Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 145:3
Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

Ephesians 5:29-30 "After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. "
