Shelton. . . Learning How Blessed I Am. . .

I haven't blogged in a really long time. . . In part, because I have not been able to put all of my feelings down. I've also been busy with work (we went electronic on August 2 with our medical records and a fellow provider was on vacation almost the entire month), my mother, and other family matters.

This past week was one of the hardest weeks I have ever experienced. Many of you are aware of the fact Shelton has been terribly ill. We attempted to try everything and finally it was time to realize that there was nothing else available to help him. He had become incontinent for the most part, he had sores over his body, and he refused to eat/drink. After having my vet talk with numerous other vets/vet schools to confirm there were no other options, I made the decision to put him down. Just as a side note, I hate those words! I honestly hate how we say "putting an animal down." I don't know how else one would express this event, but it seems cruel when defined that way.

I hated having to make this decision. I cried over it for hours on end. Yet, I knew deep down it was the only option we had. He was suffering and I was being selfish by keeping him alive.

The picture above was taking at the Vet's office. I was so blessed to have Andrea Wood come that day to take pictures. It was important to me to have those. Maybe that is strange for some of you. However, for me, it was necessary. Shelton went to sleep peacefully. He is no longer suffering. I was able to be there and hold him through the process.

What I learned throughout the process was simply this, God cares and loves for me so much! His love was shown by so many people. Two weeks prior to this, my mom fell and broke her wrist- which required surgery. My grandmother was admitted to the hospital. My dad currently has a lot of issues with his knee and will need a knee replacement soon. We are still dealing with the unspoken issues, that I hope one day to share with my readers and church family. Until then, I continue to ask for prayers. We are seeing some light. . . although rather dim and still in the distant, we know it is there. We know GOD IS ABLE!

Between all of these events, It felt as times if my life had about 10 (ok, sometimes it was like 20!) glass balls in the air- and I was barely keeping them up.

During this time, my dear friend, Jill, passed away. I was unable to attend her memorial service due to my grandmother needing me for an appointment. I don't regret that as I know two things about Jill- she would understand that I was taking care of a need, and JILL is the real deal! Jill's faith and her perseverance through ALS taught me so much. We miss her, but we know that she is in heaven right now, celebrating with our King. . . I told one of my friends, Lindsey, that all day after I learned of her passing, I had an image of Jill holding Ayden, kissing his soft head. And, I believe she was holding him as he enjoyed a wet puppy kiss from Shelton. Jill was a true prayer warrior for my family. I loved the times I could spend one on one with her helping her with needs. Those precious hours with her served me so much more than I know I ever served Jill.

I am still asking for prayer for our family and for Ms. Molly. She has always been with Shelton and her previous owners had another dog. She cries so much when I leave. So far, I have only left for short times- even today when I was at the ECU game, I was only gone for a few hours, she was hoarse from whining/howling. I am on call next week, so she will have some longer days.

Yet, through the past few weeks, God showed me his love through the hands of many people. The men who came and stayed at my house late- very late- after we hit the wall of clay- to dig Shelton's grave. The people that let us borrow pick axes to break through. The men who came to bury him. People who made certain I left the house and also that I had time alone. People who moved patients at work so I could be off for both my mother's broken wrist, surgery, and for Shelton. People who sent me cards, emailed me, and posted on my Facebook page messages of encouragement. People that I know were praying- and continue to pray- for my family. People that have called me almost daily to make certain I was ok. People who grabbed me and gave me a hug. People who prayed with me. People who have asked- How are YOU DOING?

I am so blessed.

Thank you.

A Sacred Sorrow. . . by Michael Card.

Week 1: We met and answered questions together. . . I am not going to post those here. However, I think for the following weeks I will answer one or two of the questions on my blog. Chris Dunn is leading this study at WFWB church. I, unfortunately, had to miss the second and third week. I plan to be back for week four, and I can't wait! :)

Week 2:

3. In your mind, is it possible for God to love someone through hesed and allow or cause trials or sickness to happen because of that love? Yes. Whatever trials we endure are always for his plan- which we may not understand here on this earth. God wants to change our hearts and minds in order for our lives to become more "Christ-like." It is through those trials we grow in our walk, we are able to help others, and we ultimately, become closer to God.

Week 3:

1. Think back on a recent time in your life when you might have lamented but did not. What do you think held you back from being brutally honest before God?
I recently struggled with anger at God for a current situation. I had very mixed emotions about opening up those feelings to him. Funny, isn't it, when we know He already knows those feelings? Finally, I was able to let this all out to God- pouring out my heart to him. What a relief! I think I felt that it was not "acceptable" for me to show my anger towards God and this injustice. Yet, I now know this is a form of worship. My God longs to allow us to sit down and talk it out- he cares about all the details.

Who's driving your train?

When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don't throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer. Corrie ten Boom

National Day of Prayer. . .

What if HIS PEOPLE PRAYED????

Oh Lord,

I uplift my nation. I uplift my government, the president, and all the leaders. I trust you with the future of not only the plans for my life, but the plans for our nation. What if we humbled ourselves and called out your name? You have promised you will answer our requests, if only we as a nation would humble ourselves and approach your throne with expectation. You can heal our nation, heal broken and wounded people. You, oh God, are amazing and I thank you for your daily blessings. Thank you for being in my life. Thank you for hanging on a cross for my sins. Thank you for your grace and mercy.

Angry, Frustrated, Confused.

As I write this, I am angry. OK, I will admit it, Sometimes gals do get a little ANGRY. And, boy am I just plain mad tonight. I am mad at someone who hurt me a long time ago and has tried to continue to do so. I do not wish to share details as I do not believe that brings Glory to God. I am doing, with a dear friend, Beth Moore's Psalms of Ascent. We are actually talking about this via the phone as she lives in another state. I have been clinging to Psalm 126 as it is so fitting for my life at this moment. I posted the verses in a prior post. I believe the words, I believe my God is faithful, I will TRUST HIM in this situation. I also believe that I have every right to be angry. Anger is an emotion that our Lord felt/feels, and I think it is OK to be mad.

Honestly, I am most angry at myself. Anger for letting this person come back and for not realizing their motive(s). Throughout the past month, I have not had a lot of "free time" to read. However, before Christmas, I started to read Rick Warren's latest book, The Purpose of Christmas. I was enjoying reading it, but due to the hustle and bustle of the season, I had put the book down. My intention was to pick it up again after my surgery. Well, I actually read several other books. Today, I walked by my bedside table and picked it up. Today I picked up where I had left off, the Chapter entitled "Jesus Shows You How to Make Peace with Others." Ok, Lord, could you not be any clearer?!?!?! The quote that grabbed my attention? "Are you allowing people who have hurt you in the past to continue to hurt you now?" WOW! I love it when God's perfect timing uses "something" around me to make me realize the truth.

Yesterday, before I knew the truth, before I had heard about the situation, before. . . in my prayer time God instructed me not to speak to this person for 50 days even if they contact me, and to spend that time praying and fasting for them. WOW! That's tough. Even tougher? Over the past few months, God has awakened me in the middle of the night, spoken to me at times when I've been busy at work, and caused unusual meetings with clear instructions- YOU ARE TO PRAY FOR THEM. I fought that and fought it, but ultimately, I came to be obedient. And, I will be obedient now. I humbly ask for your prayers over the next 50 days. I plan to wear out the carpet in my bedroom praying for this person to be delivered from the battle I feel they are fighting, praying for God to change my heart, and, most importantly praying "Thy Will be Done."

Thank you beautiful blogging sisters for your support in this journey.

Merry Christmas/Prayer Request. . .

I hope this email finds you well. . . I am writing to wish you a MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS!! I hope that it is one filled with family, friends, and lots of blessings. Please remember that on this day we celebrate a tiny babe's amazing birth and more importantly, his death and resurrection on the cross. I am looking forward to this Christmas with great anticipation. . . not for presents or a big meal, but for the time to rest and focus on Christ. This is a time to see my family, friends, and celebrate all the blessings of 2008!

Please remember that I will have surgery on Tuesday, December 23. The procedure is scheduled to begin around 11:30. I am humbly asking people to remember me in prayer that day. God is faithful! Too many details came together for this to happen at this time and I know he is in control. Please pray for the surgeon, the procedure, and for a quick recovery. I will try to send an update that evening, but it may be the following day. I plan to be at my house until late on Christmas Eve and then go to my parents.

God Bless! Merry Christmas!

A Good Book?

I am looking to borrow (or for suggestions so I can try to find the time to visit the Library) of a few good books while I am recovering. I am open to reading most any type (fiction, non-fiction) but prefer Christian oriented books.

Any suggestions, please send them my way! Or, if you have any I can borrow, please send them to me. Borrowing is a good thing! :o)

This past summer, I stopped reading fiction (and many non-fiction books as well) for about 10 weeks. It was a great time to be able to spend more time in THE WORD! So, my plan is to do this again in January for a few weeks. Therefore, I think as a Christmas present, I can allow myself to indulge in a few good books!!

Surgery Scheduled

My thought was that I would be able to go through 2008 without another surgery. I had high hopes for this. . . Ok, my last surgery on the feet was December 27, 2007, so I know I was cutting it close! :o)

Anyway, some of you know about this, some of you do not. . . For the past month, I have been dealing with terrible nausea, and RUQ abdominal pain. I was having issues with my Crohn's, but somehow this just felt different . . . My Crohn's flare resolved, but the pain did not. Well, after an ultrasound and a HIDASCAN, it was determined that my gallbladder functions at 0%. Basically, it just doesn't work. Crohn's patients have a higher risk of gallbladder issues. I guess mine has finally decided to give up.:o)

I saw Dr. D late yesterday and the scheduling people called me this morning. We discussed which surgeon to do this at length. We both agreed on which surgeon would be a good choice. He typically does more colon surgeries, so he is also going to take a look at my intestines and see if there is any potential problem from the Crohn's. He is also going to look at my liver (there was a potential problem found on some of the tests to determine if my gallbladder was an issue).

So, in a matter of a few phone calls and trying to juggle my patient load, I will be having surgery on December 23. Although I am not looking forward to another crazy Christmas, this is for the best for several reasons. The surgeon that we really would like to do the surgery is only available on that day. He would not be available again until late January. I am also already scheduled to be off from- having the 24-28 off for Christmas. That means less stress on the office to move scheduled patients.

My plan is to have the surgery on the 23 and go home to my parent's house on December 24. We shall see how I feel, etc.

Please be in prayer for the surgeon, for the procedure, and for my health to be fully restored. God continues to bless me and I know he is walking with me through this time. :o)

God is faithful!!

Grateful For Day 19

I am so blessed to have a physician who takes care of me and rarely charges me for the visit. He takes time with me to answer my questions and boy do I have questions at times. I think health care providers make the worse patients! :o) He is such a blessing to many and is always willing to go the extra mile. For example, today he worked me in even though his schedule was already really tight. His nurse, Heather, is also a blessing. She has helped me out so many times with scheduling issues. I've been in school and then at my new job for a year. Many times, I'm trying to balance not missing work, seeing my scheduled patients (I hate for patients to be rescheduled), and being a single working woman. This year, I've had a hard time financially, and he is always willing to call in scripts to the cheaper pharmacy, Thank you hardly seems to be adequate for all he and his staff do for me. Tonight, I am grateful that God placed us together. I actually met him through an ex-boyfriend (he was in med school and knew Dr. D. personally) when I was going through my first round of Crohn's and trying to determine the problem. Tonight, I am up with the same "thing" going on. When I saw him today, he mentioned we may need to explore my gallbladder as being the culprit. UGH! I truly hope not. My goal is to NOT have a surgery in 2008! (Granted my last surgery was on December 27, 2007! :o) However, if that is the problem, I know that God has a reason for my needing the surgery. So, I will praise him and say THANK YOU to both a great earthly physician and the great physician! :o)

URGENT PRAYER!!!

Please be in prayer for my friend, Eugenia, and her mom. Eugenia and I were out of town when we received the news that her mom had been taken to the ED with severe abdominal pain. She underwent emergency surgery around 4AM to perform a colostomy (due to a ruptured portion of her intestines). Please also be in prayer for Eugenia and myself as we were up about 30 hours straight So, I apologize if this email is a bit unorganized. Please continue to pray for her mom as she recovers from the surgery and faces a second surgery in the future.

What a blessing that her physician was on call as was one of the best surgeons!! God is always taking care of the details!!

Pray for her husband and his endurance.

Our God is an amazing God who heals!!
